A grammar design accommodating packed argument frame information on verbs
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents a comparison of two designs for implementing argument frame information on verbs. In the first design, alternating verbs will be represented with one lexical entry pr. possible argument frame. In the other design, each verb form will be associated with only one lexical entry containing a packed representation of the possible argument frames. The first design represents how valence alternations are treated in lexicalist grammars, while the second shows how valence alternations can be handled in a constructionalist grammar. The comparison is done with an implemented “deep” grammar of Norwegian.

A Subcategorisation Lexicon for German Verbs induced from a Lexicalised PCFG
The paper presents a large-scale computational subcategorisation lexicon for several thousand German verbs. The lexical entries were obtained by unsupervised learning in a statistical grammar framework: a German context-free grammar containing frame-predicting grammar rules and information about lexical heads was trained on 18.7 million words of a large German newspaper corpus. We developed a s...
متن کاملThe Discourse Basis of Constructions: Some Evidence from Korean Acquisition
1. Introduction The " return of constructions " to linguistic theory has introduced a new approach for analyzing argument structure and its acquisition (Tomasello, 1998). In this approach (Goldberg, 1995), argument structure is conceptualized as involving clause-level semantic-syntactic templates: A construction accommodates verbs of a particular semantic type taking arguments that bear certain...
متن کاملVerb Valency Descriptors for a Syntactic Treebank
An essential component of Language Engineering (LE) tools are verb class descriptors that provide information about the relations of the predicates to their arguments. The production of computationally tractable language resources necessitates the assignment of types of predicate-argument relations to a great variety of verb-centered structures: it is necessary to define not only the initial, c...
متن کاملTitle: Action Verbs, Argument Structure Constructions, and the Mirror Neuron System
2 The major semantic properties of action verbs and argument structure constructions are summarized using the theoretical framework of Construction Grammar. This sets the stage for an analysis of the neuroanatomical substrates of action verbs and argument structure constructions in support of the hypothesis that the linguistic representation of action is grounded in the mirror neuron system. Th...
متن کاملOptimal Constructions∗
This paper deals with a well-known problem in the discussion of argument linking, the flexibility that we find with particular verbs, and the constraints governing the integration of verbs with so-called argument structure constructions. We will show that traditional approaches as well as construction grammar need additional machinery to deal with variable argument linking. I will present an op...
